What is Telematics?

Telematics is literally a combination of the words Telecommunications and Informatics. Telematics, in a broad sense, is any integrated use of telecommunications with information and communications technology. It is the technology of sending, receiving and storing information relating to remote objects, such as vehicles, via telecommunication telematics-infographic-2devices. Basically, telematics is a crash-resistant black box that receives wireless information, information more advanced than broadcast radio, and does something useful with it.

Selected insurance providers can now fit a telematic device into your car that measures how well you drive. By having the device installed in your car, it’s possible for you to prove that you drive safely. Your premiums are then based on how safe and conscientious a driver you are instead of paying for insurance based on the average driver.

Who is Telematics good for?

Telematics is great for anyone who wants to take control of their insurance costs.

When it comes to car insurance, if you’re unlucky enough to fall into one of the high risk groups, you’re likely to be looking at high premiums to insure your car. Telematics aims to help those in high-risk groups, such as:

  • inexperienced drivers
  • less frequent drivers with a low annual mileage
  • young drivers

If you fall into one of these groups telematics insurance could help you pay cheaper premiums. Although a telematics policy could potentially lead to savings for anyone who’s a good driver.

Young Drivers & Telematics

Young Drivers & TelematicsWe’re all about encouraging safe driving, and with good reason – young, inexperienced drivers have more accidents. This is what makes  insurance for young drivers more expensive. So if we can help our community of young drivers stay safe on the road, we can reward them with savings on their auto insurance with Telematics. We’ll send you an Telematics Device for you to install in your vehicle – it’s quick and easy. The Telematics Device sends us information on how you’re driving, so we can treat you as an individual and reward you for driving well. TheTelematics Device you install in your vehicle records speed, acceleration, braking and cornering. We also collect data on your vehicle’s GPS location. Using the Telematics Device, we build up a picture of your driving style – including your speed, acceleration, braking and cornering. We review your billing 3 times a year based on how you’ve driven – so if you drive well, you’ll pay up to 25% less.
